The First Subsea Diverless Bend Stiffener Connectors (DBSCs) comprise a Ballgrab connector and bend stiffener. The ball and taper Ballgrab connection works on the simple principle of a ball engaged in a taper. The male connector is inserted directly within a standard I/J tube or pre-machined female connector – it is self-energising and self-aligning. As the male connector's balls roll up the I/J tube wall / female connector, tapers drive the balls outwards and the tightness of the grip increases in direct proportion to the load applied.
There are three types of Diverless Bend Stiffener Connectors (DBSCs) reflecting the demands of the offshore environment and application:
Type I allows risers and umbilicals to be installed in existing "I/J" tube bellmouths, the connection is completed using an ROV.
Type II is for new build applications where the DBSC female connector is pre-installed, and the connection completed using an ROV.
Type III is for new build applications, the DBSC connector is pre-installed and allows for a ROV-less installation.
