The First Subsea PLRTs feature the unique, self-activating mechanism of Ballgrab ball and taper technology. The tool is simply guided into the end of the pipeline and, once engaged, cannot be released until the load has been removed. A simple disengage mechanism allows the tool to be released and recovered for re-use.

The Ballgrab PLRT works on the simple principle of a ball engaged in a taper. The ball grips the pipeline, in direct proportion to the load applied. The Ballgrab PLRT is designed:

• to accommodate wide tolerances
• Individual multi-point grip
• Self activating and self aligning
• to pick up pipes when flooded or dewatered
• to be abandonable subsea during use
• for use in either "S" lay or "J" lay configuration
• with integral dewatering and pig catching capabilities
